Hair loss at 17?!?

I've had long hair for the past 5 years or so and I've never noticed a problem with this. Over the past month or so I've noticed that a lot of my hair has been falling out. I originally thought it was just because it was summer and I usually lose more hair during summer. Then a friend of mine was taking my picture and when he showed it to me, I noticed that I had large gaps in my hair all along my head. What's going on with this?! I haven't changed shampoos or starting doing anything different. I have no baldness in my family at all. My father and grandfather (who are in their 50's and 80's) both still have a full head of hair with no signs of balding. This is really starting to scare me. Is there any explanation for this. Is it temporary? Is there anything I can do to stop it? Losing my hair is probably one my biggest fears. I'd rather go through about anything before baldness. Can someone please shed (no pun intended) a little light on this?

Baldness is not usually caused by a disease, but is related to aging, heredity, and testosterone. In addition to the common male and female patterns from a combination of these factors, other possible causes of hair loss, especially if in an unusual pattern, include:

- Hormonal changes (for example, thyroid disease, childbirth, or use of the birth control pill)

- A serious illness (like a tumor of the ovary or adrenal glands) or fever

- Medication such as cancer chemotherapy

- Excessive shampooing and blow-drying

- Emotional or physical stress

- Nervous habits such as continual hair pulling or scalp rubbing

- Burns or radiation therapy

- Alopecia areata -- bald patches that develop on the scalp, beard, and, possibly, eyebrows. Eyelashes may fall out as well. This is thought to be an immune disorder.

- Tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp)

HOMEOPATHIC TREATMENT for Hair Loss / Baldness

Hair-loss is again just an indicator that there is something not well in your body. The hairs may fall due to a local infection or due to a systemic disorder or deficiency. The treatment also varies accordingly. The following homeopathic medicines are often found indicated in cases of hair fall:

Alum, Ars, Bar-c, Carbo-veg, Flour-ac, Graph, Lyco, Nat-m, Nit-ac, Phos-ac, Phos, Selen, Sep, Syph, Thallium, Vinca.

A number of things can cause excessive hair loss. For example, about 3 or 4 months after an illness or a major surgery, you may suddenly lose a large amount of hair. This hair loss is related to the stress of the illness and is temporary.

Hormonal problems may cause hair loss. If your thyroid gland is overactive or underactive, your hair may fall out. This hair loss usually can be helped by treatment thyroid disease. Hair loss may occur if male or female hormones, known as androgens and estrogens, are out of balance. Correcting the hormone imbalance may stop your hair loss.

Many women notice hair loss about 3 months after they've had a baby. This loss is also related to hormones. During pregnancy, high levels of certain hormones cause the body to keep hair that would normally fall out. When the hormones return to pre-pregnancy levels, that hair falls out and the normal cycle of growth and loss starts again.

Some medicines can cause hair loss. This type of hair loss improves when you stop taking the medicine. Medicines that can cause hair loss include blood thinners (also called anticoagulants), medicines used for gout, medicines used in chemotherapy to treat cancer, vitamin A (if too much is taken), birth control pills and antidepressants.

Certain infections can cause hair loss. Fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss in children. The infection is easily treated with antifungal medicines.

Finally, hair loss may occur as part of an underlying disease, such as lupus or diabetes. Since hair loss may be an early sign of a disease, it is important to find the cause so that it can be treated.

Hair loss at 17?!?

I will shed light on your question. Lets see, unless you aren't using chemicles such as hair dye, gel... then there should not be a problem. Especially if your hair is already falling out, do not use dye or gel. and avoid washing with shampoo. only conditioner!!.. um, sometimes when hair grows toooo long then it will fall out. hair can only grow to a certain length, and when that length is reached then the hair either stops growing (dormat stage) or falls out altogether... go to a doctor to have pro. advice.. hair

Hair loss at 17?!?

i started losing my hair at the age of 22, gradually its falling out. my ob told me to go to a dermatologist to have some test done. it could be hormonal hun. I've been using this shampoo it works really well, if you are not totally bald in the spots that u are referring to. this might work but u have to use it all the time. no switching. its called nioxin, its a little pricey but it works. (well it works for me) but it is a medicated shampoo.) also its not your fathers side of the family that you get losing your hair from. its your mothers side so check out grand dad on moms side. it could be genetic.

good luck. hope i helped ya a little.

Hair loss at 17?!?

There are several conditions which cause hair fall. Some of the major causes are

A prolonged illness.

Surgery.

Stress

Thyroid hormone imbalance.

Imbalance of male and female hormone.

Few Medicines like anticoagulants, medicines used for gout, chemotherapy for cancer, excess of vitamin A, birth control pills and antidepressants.

In conditions like lupus, diabetes etc

Fungal infection of scalp.

Hair styles which involve tying of hair tightly, usage of tight rollers, etc

Use of harsh chemicals or hot oil for treatment.

Baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia)

Baldness occurs both in men and women as their age advances.

The baldness which occurs in men is called 閳ユ笗ale pattern baldness閳?and is characterized by receding hairline and loss of hair on the crown area. It is generally experienced around and from age of 25 years.

The baldness which occurs in women is called 閳ユ竾emale pattern baldness閳?and is characterized by overall thinning of hair on scalp and little loss of hair on crown or hairline. This can begin at puberty but usually occurs after menopause.

The cause for both types of baldness is attributed to genetic factors which have been inherited.

Alopecia Areata

Small circular patches of baldness start appearing on the scalp and hair re-grows in these patches after few days. This is called as alopecia areata. Persons who are affected by this condition will have repeated hair fall and regrowth of the above mentioned pattern.

In severe condition total loss of scalp hair occurs. This is called as 閳ユ竵lopecia totalis閳?.Some times complete loss of body hair also occurs. This is called as 閳ユ竵lopecia universalis閳? In few people the hair re-grows . But the hair loss may occur once again. This is an autoimmune disease.
