Go to the pound and find a grown dog with short hair. There is no dog (to my immediate recollection) that does not shed at all, but shedding from a dog with extremely short hair is hardly noticeable, especially if you brush her frequently.

A Standard Poodle would be perfect (although pricey). All poodles are virtually non-shedding, and the large "standard size" are excellent guard dogs...the original "police dog" in France. Our Yorkie hardly sheds at all. He is not a minature and weighs 10lbs. He is fiesty and barks to let us know whenever anyone pulls into the drive. Unfortunately, the only breeds that don't shed tend to be toy breeds, such as Maltese, Yorkshire Terriers, Poodles, etc. They're on the small side, but they can be trained as a 'watch dog', but not as a 'guard dog'. (the difference being that watch dogs will only alert you to any dangerous/suspicious activity, but guard dogs will actually attack on command)

However, if you only need a watch dog, then a lot of the terrier breeds (Scottish, Westie, etc.) don't shed, are bigger than the aforementioned toy breeds, and will do a good job of alerting and protecting you. You can also look for any dog mixed with a Poodle, such as a Labradoodle.

But if you really do want a dog I suggest a Standard Poodle, I have 2 and they are actually the biggest babies ever but you wouldnt know it from their barks. They sound just like Rottweilers and they shed very little, more like how people shed, but you do have to brush them or take them to the groomers because they will get matts.

what your looking for is a wheaten terrier. they are a nonshedding breed. they do require a bit of grooming htey get as big as a lab or even a little smaller depending upon the breeder. as to protecting your family if you get a male you shouldn't really have a problem there are training courses you can take to make him a guard dog. I also recommend taking an obedience course so that they will obey you and only you.

You need to consider getting a dog with hair instead of fur. Such as a poodle, yorkie, etc. They aren't good protection dogs, but as long as you have to cut their hair then they won't shed. That's easy to remember.

a shocker doesn't shed, and will be probably between 12-20 pounds i think. but its a mix between a shitzu and a cocker spanial, i believe, the pet store that i go to have 1 and they said that he doesn't shed. as for protecting the family, i don't know.

I would say St. Poodle or Labradoodle. I currently have a Labradoodle who lives in the house with us and she is a very light shedder, but let someone who is not part of the family try to walk in the house without knocking or ringing the doorbell! I have extended family that have always been comfortable just walking in before Abadi came along, but now if they try it she will keep them at the front door until we come and tell her it's okay. I have no doubt that if one of our family members were being threatened she would attack, but it's also nice not having to worry about her around children....she absolutely loves them! The St. Poodle can make a good protector for the family too as they can be vicious if their family was threatened. This breed is greatly misunderstood.
